3-D Printer Buying Guide Dos and Don’ts
Most people these days are seriously contemplating purchase of 3-d printers simply because of the cost effectiveness involved. In addition to the quality aspect, you should think before you buy a 3-d printer about several other considerations.
Initial expenses
One of the first things you would most probably consider would be the initial expenses associated with your 3-d printer. Aspects pertaining to equipment post processing, service costs during the first year, initial price of the printer, price of optional equipment you desire, consumables kit, training and installation expenses as well as ongoing maintenance starting from the second year since the purchase.
Consumables expenses
Depending on the element and extent of 3d functioning used by your 3-d printer the associated expenses for your consumables or additional materials may vary. A large portion of the cost would also depend on individual geometry of the inbuilt parts in the 3-d printer mechanism. Using expensive variants of prototype materials can be a waste of money because certain specific materials are more expensive compared to others.
Cost per volume unit
In order to be certain about the expenses for your consumables, you need to know about the associated expenses for each unit volume. Instead of looking at only the product weight, you need to look at costs for each unit part required for the 3-d printer. After all, the requirement for consumables for a cellular phone component creation will differ drastically from when you want to print some housings of a water pump or exhaust manifolds!
Operational expenses
One contributing factor to differential prices amongst 3-d printers is in the operational overheads. Depending on how much time it takes to manufacture a particular part, the costs can differ dramatically. Some 3-d printers might necessitate more steps for installation as well as setup, which again impacts availability and schedule of the key employees.
Throughput
Throughput is nothing but the amount in cubic volumes, which can be manufactured in a particular timeframe. While some 3-d printers have the capability to produce many copies of one item within one pass (and thus facilitate support for multiple users) other printers might be able to print only one copy of a single item within one pass.
Maintenance and service
Maintenance and associated expenses pertaining to the service of your 3-d printers will be another critical aspect to consider when you decide to buy any of these printers. Make sure you check with your prospective vendor if the service includes warranty. Most 3-d printer manufacturers these days, at least the reputed ones, offer a good warranty. If your 3-d printer comes with warranty, make sure to check the duration of the warranty period. Another aspect you need to consider is the extent and level of service offered as part of the warranty. Certain service aspects maybe part of your warranty, while others might be excluded. It could also be the case that once the warranty period ends, the support as well as associated service costs rise dramatically.
Thus, as you can see, there are many factors to consider in addition to the mere purchase price of your 3-d printer.
