Being a Green Printer Does Not Have to Cost Much
Going green is all the rage today, and for a good reason too. There is only one planet that we can call home at the moment. As thus, we need to do all we can to help in saving it. One of the ways we can do that is by being a green printer.
Being a green printer means being environmentally conscious about the way we use our printer and about the way we hire printing services. However, many people are under the impression that it actually costs more to be an environmentally conscious printer, and so they do not even give green printing a try.
However, going green when it comes to printing does not have to cost at all. In fact, if you do it properly and conscientiously, you can even save money. You will also feel the joy and satisfaction of doing your part in helping to save our home.
How can you do green printing right within your home? Here are a few tips on how to get it done.
1. Recycle your paper. Do you throw away those printouts where only one side is used? Do not do that; instead, use the clean side for printing out your less important print jobs. When you are done with both sides of the paper and you do not have to use them anymore, bring your old printouts to the recycling center so they can make new paper out of it.
2. Use recycled paper. Is the paper that you use for your normal printing jobs made out of virgin fiber? Did you know that it takes three tons of wood to produce a ton of virgin, uncoated paper? Imagine how many trees it takes to produce three tons of wood. Recycled paper may not look as white and as pretty as virgin paper, but it is more conscientious to use recycled paper for normal printing jobs.
3. Check your printer inks. A lot of printer ink cartridges available in the market today contain heavy metals. These heavy metals are needed to produce really bright colors in inkjet printouts. Unfortunately, heavy metals can leach into the ground water in landfills and poison our water supplies. So, it may be a good idea to go for replacement inks that are not heavy on the heavy metals.
4. Go paperless. Do you really need to print out that document? Maybe it would be better to just create a PDF file out of it and just distribute the file through email or through CDs. At least CDs can be reused and recycled effectively, and you can completely do away with having to use your printer and your printer ink too much.
5. Turn your printer off. This is kind of basic, but a lot of people leave the power on their printers on continuously. Not only leaving the power on your printer a waste of electricity, it can also cause your printer ink to clog the printer head and damage the printer itself.
There are many ways that you can engage in green printing, and there are many advantages that you can get out of it. Most of all, you will get that joy and satisfaction that you have done your part in saving the environment.
