Beware of Cartridge Recycling Scams
Spotting a scam is not always easy, especially when it comes to the recycling of used printer ink cartridges. This is because many companies and organizations that claim to recycle printer cartridges may not actually be doing what they are claiming. In fact, there are many people who have devised their own non-profit organizations and have gone around setting up printer cartridge recycling stations. These fake organizations then send these printer ink cartridges in and actually collect the money themselves.
Now, this type of situation is only a scam because someone claims that they are a non-profit organization when in fact they are not. However, some people would debate, “what does it matter if the end result in recycling?” This seems to be the biggest debate when it comes to who really is behind the recycling organization of printer cartridges in your area. Nevertheless, there are a few things you can do in order to avoid these types of scams if it is something you feel strongly about.
First and foremost, the majority of printer cartridge organizations have either a toll free hotline or an address of their company located on their recycling stations. You can simply contact the company directly and ask them who is responsible for the unit in your general area and where the money goes to. Some companies will immediately tell you that there is no company involved other than themselves and that they are the ones who benefit from the program. This is not considered a scam! This is actually a service being offered by many recycling centers in order to better the environment.
It’s only a scam if someone claims to be representing a company or not for profit organization when in fact they are pocketing the recycling money on their own. That is why you should investigate each ink cartridge recycling station that you come across so you can determine who established the station and also where the money is going. When in doubt or when you are concerned you should simply contact the owner of the station via the company information in order to determine where the money is going and who is responsible.
The best way to ensure that the recycling station you are considering is legitimate is to find one that is actually located on the property of a non-profit such as school or church. These types of recycling stations are rarely scam related and are instead set up to raise money for the non-profit for which they are located on the property of.
Therefore, you can trust that the money is going to a good cause. You can even speak to the non-profits directly and ask them where they will distribute the money to when they send the used printer cartridges in for recycling. This way you can ensure that the program is not a scam and will have knowledge of what or who the program is benefiting.
The bottom line is that the recycling of printer cartridges is good for the environment. However, if you smell a scam or suspect a scam, then you should consider finding another alternative for recycling your used printer cartridges. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
