Biggest Acquisitions by HP in the last 25 Years
HP owes its remarkable growth with the acquisitions it made. No matter how big or small these mergers and corporate acquisitions were the company knows that all were instrumental to its cognizance in the market for computer needs.
While it is true that its $13.9 billion acquisition of Electronic Data Systems Corporation in 2008 was one of the largest, there were other notable partnerships HP made with other companies. Trace its history for the biggest merger acquisitions over the last 25 years through the foregoing paragraphs.
HP acquisitions from 1984 to 1993
In 1985, HP acquired the GM IT of the Electronic Data Systems Corporation or EDC Corp. In January of 1989, it acquired Eon Systems Inc., an electronics company. This was followed by corporate acquisitions with Apollo Computer in May and Optotech Inc, a disk drive company in November 1989.
In April of 1993, it also acquired Four Pi Systems Corporation, a company selling medical equipment. This was preceded by the June 1993 corporate acquisitions of Metrix Network Systems. In the same year, HP also acquired BT&D Technologies as well as Eesof Inc. These deals were closed in September and October respectively. Among all these acquisitions for the 10-year period, HP’s acquisition of Apollo Computer in May 1989 was the largest at $476 million.
HP acquisitions from 1994 to 2003
Its first acquisition for the 10-year period was Versatest, an automatic test equipment company in October of 1994. It also acquired: CaLan Inc. in June 1995; ElseWare Corp. in December 1995; SecureWare Internet Security Division in February 1996; and Prolin in 1997. But, these were the biggest corporate acquisitions made by HP for this period:
- Convex Computer. This was a deal made in September 1995 and was worth $150 million.
- Parametric Technology Corporation. HP acquired the company’s graphic technology at a price of $9.273 million in June 1996.
- Division Inc. This computer programming company was bought by HP for $6 million.
- Verifone. This was one of the biggest acquisitions for the 10-year period at $1.18 billion. The electronic bill payment company was acquired in April 1997.
- Bluestone Software. The computer software firm was acquired at a price of $470 million in January 2001.
- Comdisco Inc. This IT Company was bought at $610 million on August 2001.
- Storage Apps. A data storage firm, HP bought this for $350 million on September 2001.
- Compaq. This is known to be the biggest of all HP acquisitions. With a whopping price of $25 billion, HP-Compaq was formed in May 2002.
- Procter and Gamble IT. Also one of the biggest for the 10-year period, HP bought the company for $3 billion.
HP’s biggest corporate acquisitions from 2004 to the present
There were a lot of companies who were proud to form part of HP’s undisputed team. But, here are some of the biggest acquisitions for this period:
- Scitex Vision. This printing service was acquired by the company for a price of $230 million in November 2005.
- Peregrine Systems. This company was bought by HP for a price of $425 million in December 2005.
- Mercury Interactive. For a price of $4.5 billion, HP formed a merger with Mercury Interactive in November 2006.
- Opsware. This July 2007 acquisition was the biggest for the year at a price of $1.6 billion.
- Neoware. The acquisition also took place in July 2007 for a price of $214 million.
- NUR Macroprinters Ltd. This printer company was bought by HP in March 2008 for a price of $457.076 million.
- Exstream Software. Also acquired in March 2008, this was priced at $371 million.
- Tower Software. This Australian computer software company was bought by HP on March 2008 for a price of $101.529 million.
- Electronic Data Systems. As mentioned, this was one of the biggest merger acquisitions made by HP. The merger took place in August 2008 for a price of $13.9 billion.
- Lefthand Networks Inc. This was bought by HP in October 2008 for a price of $360 million.
- 3Com. The latest among all corporate acquisitions made by the company, the deal was closed in November 2009 for a price of $2.7 billion.
These series of corporate and merger acquisitions made by HP show how well the company can manage to form a partnership with another IT company. Expect that there are other big acquisitions to come in the next years.
