How to Recycle Your Printer Ink Cartridges
When your printer ink cartridges have run dry, what do you do with them? Do you just pull them off their cradle in your printer and throw them away? If so, then you are missing out on the opportunity to save the planet, and on earning some cash from the effort. Instead of throwing them away, you should recycle your ink cartridges.
There is a need for us to recycle ink cartridges. The ink cartridge itself is made from plastic, a petroleum-based product. The partial printer heads that many ink cartridges contain are made of metal. The ink itself contains chemicals that can pollute ground water. In short, we need to recover the non-renewable materials that printer ink cartridges are made of, as well as to prevent the pollution that the chemicals in them can cause to the environment.
It is actually easy to recycle ink cartridges. There are many ways by which we can do it. Here are some tips on recycling printer ink cartridges.
1. Return empty cartridges to the manufacturer. If your ink cartridges are original, branded ones, you should check the label for instructions on how to recycle it. Most printer ink manufacturers like HP have recycling programs where the buyers can just send empty cartridges back to their local HP office.
2. Return compatible ink cartridges to the seller. Many sellers of compatible ink cartridges also have programs where they recycle ink cartridges. If you use compatible ink cartridges and you bought your cartridges online, you can check out your seller for instructions on how you can return the empty cartridges to them for recycling. You can also visit sellers in department stores and superstores to trade in your empty cartridges or have them refilled.
3. Check with your local recycling center. Local governments nowadays operate recycling centers, and among the items they accept are printer ink cartridges. You should visit your local recycling center and see if there are special instructions that you need to abide for them to take your empty cartridges.
4. Sell your empty cartridges. There are many private agencies out there that buy empty ink cartridges. If you want to make money out of your recycling efforts, you can search these agencies on the Internet and see how much you can earn for your empty cartridges.
5. Donate your cartridges. If you are feeling charitable, you can donate your empty printer ink cartridges to your kids’ schools or to your church. Schools and churches are always running fund drives for their various projects, and you can help them out with your donation of empty cartridges, and they can use the money they can get from selling these cartridges.
There are many ways by which you can recycle ink cartridges. They are all easy to do and you can even earn some money with it. Most of all, in recycling printer ink cartridges, you are doing your part in helping to save the planet. That is the best outcome out of this endeavor.
