In the years since Apple release iPhone to the mobile phone market, the other bigwigs in the cellular phone arena have scrambled to top the innovations that Apple introduced through the iPhone, such as the multi-touch screens, with their own cellular models.  Unfortunately, all these cellphone models to date have yet to match the iPhone even though they have similar features.

But that may change soon.  In just the previous month, the Finnish telecoms giant Nokia released its Nokia N900, which some critics have come to call as the iPhone killer.  It remains to be seen if the Nokia N900 can outperform the iPhone, but the former has features that can easily compare with Apple’s baby.

Working Is Easier with Nokia N900

The most revolutionary feature of the Apple iPhone is definitely its multi-touch screen.  With a few swipes and pinches on the surface of the iPhone, you can get it to do exactly what you want.  This, however, takes getting used to, and many mobile phone users are not exactly satisfied with the on-screen keyboard that the iPhone has.  In this, the Nokia N900 trumps the iPhone – it has a tactile keyboard that slides from underneath the body of the phone.

It does not end there.  The N900 also has Skype and GTalk pre-installed.  You do not have to download it to be able to use it, which is what you need to do when it comes to the iPhone.  In addition, the N900 has a camera that is fully dedicated to video calls.  You no longer need to depend on your laptop and webcam just to be able to make those video calls.

More Freedom and More Savings – Possible with Nokia N900

Many mobile phone consumers dislike the fact that the iPhone is locked in with AT&T.  Not everyone likes the services of AT&T and not everyone appreciates this lack of freedom in choice that Apple imposed upon them.  Compared to the iPhone, the Nokia N900 is unlocked, meaning that anyone can insert the SIM of their choice into the phone and be able to use the phone without any problems.

This is priceless if you travel a lot and need to use your phone on your travels.  Because the iPhone is locked in with AT&T, you have no choice but to shoulder international roaming costs.  With the N900, all you need to do is to buy a local SIM card and call whenever necessary.

But the best example of freedom that consumers can enjoy with the N900 is the fact that it uses a Linux-based operating system.  The core of this OS is open source and users have access to this core.  So, geeks can tweak their phones to their heart’s content.

Wider Range of Features

The Nokia N900 has other features that look to be wider in range than the iPhone’s own.  For one, the N900 supports more codecs for playing audio and video files.  Its Firefox-based browser is also capable of reading Flash applications, which are essential for web-based gaming and video streaming.  The removable memory cards also make the N900 a lot more flexible.
