It cannot be denied that iPhone’s entry into the mobile phone arena led to a revolutionary change that shook the entire industry.  The big players in the cellular phone market became unsettled with the large market share hauled by the iPhone, so much that over the years they have churned cellphone after cellphone as iPhone competitors.

The iPhone competitors in the last few years have not met with success in dislodging the iPhone from its throne as the king of mobile phones, but the new crop of smartphones released this 2009 promise to at least give the iPhone a run for its money.  These phones even have their own app store.

Whether they can seriously topple the iPhone remains to be seen.  Nonetheless, they provide a viable alternative to mobile phone consumers who are not really attracted to the reported magnificence of the iPhone.  What are these iPhone competitors that show potential to outrun the iPhone?  Here are five of them.

1. Palm Pre.  Palm has always been known for its line of smartphones, starting with the personal digital assistants or PDAs that they released in the mid-1990s.  In an effort to win over iPhone enthusiasts, the company came out with the Palm Pre.  The Palm Pre runs on the newest version of the Palm webOS.  Just like the iPhone, it has a touchscreen but it also has a sliding QWERTY keyboard.

Multimedia features of the Palm Pre include a 3-megapixel camera.  It has email and instant messaging capabilities under the Palm Synergy software suite.  With an 8-gigabyte memory, the Palm Pre has Wi-Fi connectivity and GPS.

2. HTC Touch Diamond 2.  The Taiwan-based HTC Corporation is also one of the top companies in the running for iPhone’s throne.  This year, it released the HTC Touch Diamond 2, a smartphone running on the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.  The HTC Touch Diamond 2, as its name suggests, also has a touchscreen and is capable of connecting on HSDPA as well as on Wi-Fi networks.

This newest version of the HTC Touch model allows users to send emails and instant messages using Microsoft’s Mobile Outlook suite.  It has a 5-megapixel camera as well as access to multimedia apps through the Microsoft Marketplace.

3. HTC Magic.  The HTC Touch is not the only offering that the HTC Corporation has to the range of iPhone competitors out there.  It also has HTC Magic.  The HTC Magic has a number of features similar to those of the HTC Touch.  The biggest and most glaring difference, however, is the fact that HTC Magic runs on the new Google Android OS.

The HTC Magic also has a less powerful camera at 3.2 megapixels, but it can also connect to HSDPA and Wi-Fi networks.  Installed apps include access to AmazonMP3, Google Maps and YouTube, as well as other apps downloadable from the Android Market.

4. LG-GMT30.  LG has also long been in the running to dislodge the iPhone as the market leader, and this can be seen from the long line of smartphones it has released over the years since the iPhone’s launch.  The latest in this line is none other than the LG-GMT30.  The LG-GMT30 runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, has a touchscreen and is capable of connecting to HSDPA and Wi-Fi networks.  It also makes use of the Mobile Outlook Suite, with other apps available for download at the Windows Marketplace.

5. Nokia N86.  Nokia is a giant among mobile phone manufacturers, and its sales volume is close enough to rival that of Apple for the iPhone.  The Nokia N86 is a smartphone running on the Symbian S60 OS, with a touchscreen and an 8-gigabyte memory.  Users can connect to Wi-Fi and HSDPA networks using this phone.  Nokia has its own email and instant messaging suite, and apps are available from Nokia’s own store.

There are many contenders to the iPhone’s throne, but which iPhone competitor will successfully dethrone it, no one knows as yet.  But even if these phones fail to edge the iPhone out, they can at least provide sound alternatives for those who do not find the iPhone appealing.
