The computer industry is all a-buzz these days, now that Microsoft has already released to the market the latest version of the Windows operating system, which is none other than Windows 7. According to reports and reviews, Windows 7 is everything that its predecessor Windows Vista should have been. Compared to Windows Vista, Windows 7 is more user-friendly and has a lot less bugs and issues with compatibility.

If you are like a lot of PC users who are dissatisfied with Vista, even to the point of downgrading to Windows XP, you must be raring to give Windows 7 a try. Upgrading your system to this newest version of the Windows OS will not be cheap; you will have to buy the DVD installer. And if your computer lacks the hardware necessary to run this OS, you may need to put some fixes on your computer as well. But did you know that if you bought your PC from a Microsoft-partnered computer manufacturer any time between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010, you are qualified for a free upgrade to Windows 7?

Hewlett-Packard is just one of the Microsoft partner companies that are now offering a free Windows 7 upgrade. Is your computer an HP PC? Then here is what you should do to get your free Windows 7 upgrade.

1. Check your receipts. Just like what was mentioned above, you can only get a free upgrade if you bought your HP PC between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010. When you order an upgrade kit from HP, you would be asked to include a scan of your proofs of purchase. Thus, be ready with those scans before you place your order.

2. Check your version of Vista. Windows 7 upgrades are available only with certain versions of Vista – Home Premium, Business and Ultimate, in particular. Also, there are certain paths that must be observed when upgrading from Vista or XP to Windows 7. For example, if your Vista is the 32-bit Home Premium version, you are supposed to upgrade to the Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium version. If you do not follow the upgrade paths, Windows 7 will not work properly on your PC.

3. Check your HP computer model. Unfortunately, not all models of HP PCs are eligible for a free upgrade. So, before you place your order for an upgrade kit, make sure that the computer you bought is a model eligible for the upgrade.

Aside from these three steps, there are a few other things that you may need to know before upgrading to Windows 7 from HP. One is that you should use Internet Explorer when you access the Windows 7 upgrade pages on the HP website. Otherwise, your order will not be processed. Second, you need to make sure that you place your order for an upgrade kit no later than February 15, 2010. If you fail to do so, you would be missing out on the free upgrade. Lastly, the free Windows 7 upgrade is not really entirely free. You may need to shell out some cash for the shipping costs and taxes, depending on your location.
